What kind of shooter is Shmup Rogue?
Most plane games online fall into one of three groups: flight simulators about takeoffs and landings, dogfight games where you chase other jets around a 3D sky, and arcade plane shooters where the screen scrolls and you fly straight into a storm of enemies. Shmup Rogue is the third kind: a top-down airplane shooting game in the tradition of 90s arcade cabinets.
You never worry about stalling or fuel. Your plane moves exactly where you steer it, the guns fire on their own, and every second is about lining up shots and slipping through gaps in the enemy fire. Fighters, bombers, gunship helicopters, destroyers, tanks and turrets come at you in timed waves over the sea, the coast, cities and finally space.
What makes it more than a quick plane shooter is the hangar. Between waves you spend the scrap you collected on new weapon pods, items and stat upgrades, so the jet you fly in wave 15 is very different from the one you took off in. Each run builds a new plane.

How it plays
How to play

Take off
Pick a fighter jet, a starting weapon pod and a danger level. Danger 0 is a gentle training sortie.

Shoot and dodge
Your plane fires automatically. Steer through the gaps, hold Focus to slow down for tight spots, and drop a bomb to wipe the screen when you are cornered.

Power up mid-flight
Shoot down item carriers for colour-cycling crystals (your current colour levels the main gun up, a new colour switches it), P power-ups that raise it up to level 8, extra bombs and repairs.

Upgrade in the hangar
When the wave timer runs out, land, pick one of four stat upgrades for each level gained and buy weapon pods. Up to six pods fly alongside your main gun.
Controls
Keyboard: WASD or arrow keys to move, Z or Space to fire (auto-fire is on), X or K to bomb, hold Shift to slow down, Esc or P to pause. Gamepads work too.
Touch: drag anywhere to fly, tap with two fingers to drop a bomb.
Upgrades
Upgrade your jet between waves
This is what keeps one plane game interesting for a whole run: every wave ends in the hangar, and every choice changes how your jet flies and fights.
Merge weapon pods
Mount up to six weapon pods beside your main gun. Two identical pods of the same tier merge into the next tier, from I up to IV.
Stack set bonuses
Every pod is Ballistic, Energy, Explosive, Drone or Precision. Fly two or more of the same class and a set bonus kicks in, growing with each extra pod.
Items and stats
36 items reshape your 16 stats, often at a price: more damage for less max HP, interest on saved scrap, one free revive. Each level-up adds a stat pick of your own.
Endless mode
Clear wave 20 and the run doesn't have to end: endless mode brings the bosses back in rotation while the waves keep coming.

Frequently asked questions
Is Shmup Rogue free to play?
Yes. Press Play in the game window at the top of this page and you are flying — there is nothing to buy and no sign-up.
Is it a flight simulator?
No. It is an arcade airplane shooter. There is no takeoff or landing to manage; you steer the plane, dodge bullets and shoot down waves of enemies.
Can I play on my phone or tablet?
Yes. On a phone or tablet, drag anywhere on the screen to fly. Fire is automatic, and a two-finger tap drops a bomb.
How do I upgrade my plane?
Destroyed enemies drop scrap. After each wave you land in the hangar, pick stat upgrades for every level gained and spend scrap on weapon pods and items. Two identical pods of the same tier merge into the next tier.
How long is one flight?
Wave 1 lasts 35 seconds and each wave adds three more until they reach a full minute at wave 10, and the final wave 20 lasts 90 seconds. A full 20-wave run takes about 20–30 minutes, and endless mode continues after that.
Can I fly with friends?
Not yet. Shmup Rogue is single-player today; online co-op is planned but not available yet.
