Can ballistic and energy weapons work together? Mixing classes in Shmup Rogue

Ballistic and energy pods never conflict in Shmup Rogue. Here is what actually fires, what your main gun scales with, and how to build a mixed loadout that still hits hard.

A common question once your six weapon slots fill up: "I have Ballistic pods and Energy pods. Do they cancel each other out? Can my main gun use both?"

Short answer: your pods never conflict. All six fire at the same time. The only thing that picks a side is your main gun, and that decides which stats are worth buying.

A mixed loadout: Nuclear Missile, Homing Missiles, Gatling, Vulcan Pod, Laser Lance and Shield Orb, with Ballistic, Energy and Explosive set bonuses all active

Two layers of firepower

Shmup Rogue mixes two kinds of shooter, and each one brings its own weapons:

LayerWhat it isCan you mix?
Weapon pods (6 slots)Brotato-style pods bought in the hangarYes. Every pod has its own cooldown and fires on its own. Class does not matter.
Main gunRaiden-style Vulcan, Laser or Plasma, level 1–8One at a time. Your ship picks it; crystals can swap it for the current wave.

So a loadout like the one above, with Gatling and Vulcan Pod (Ballistic), Laser Lance and Shield Orb (Energy), and Nuclear Missile and Homing Missiles (Explosive), runs all six pods together. The set bonuses stack too: Ballistic (2), Energy (2) and Explosive (2) are all active at the same time.

Where the "conflict" really comes from: scaling

Each weapon adds a share of one class stat to its damage:

damage per hit = (base + class stat × scaling) × (1 + Damage%)

The main gun follows the same rule, but it only reads one stat:

Main gunScales withShips that start with it
Vulcan (red)Ballistic Damage, ×0.5 per bulletTHUNDERBOLT Mk-II, BULWARK, WASP, MIDAS
Laser (blue)Energy Damage, ×0.25 per beam tickFALCON
Plasma (purple)Energy Damage, ×0.22 per beam tickPHANTOM

Say you fly THUNDERBOLT Mk-II (Vulcan main gun) and stack +5 Energy Damage. Your Laser Lance pods get +4 per bolt from it. Your main gun gets nothing, because Vulcan only reads Ballistic Damage. Nothing is broken. That Energy stat just helps fewer of your guns than it would on FALCON.

Pods differ too. Per +1 of their stat:

  • Ballistic: Railgun ×2.0, Vulcan Pod ×0.8, Flak ×0.6, Gatling ×0.4
  • Energy: Ion Pulse ×1.2, Plasma Arc ×1.0, Laser Lance ×0.8
  • Shield Orb counts towards the Energy set, but its damage scales with Engineering, not Energy Damage.

You can always check what your main gun is: the Primary panel in the hangar shows it at the top (for example Main Gun: Vulcan Lv3).

Pure build vs mixed build

Set bonuses grow with the number of pods in one class:

Pods in a class23456
Ballistic / Energy Damage+1+2+3+4+5
  • Six Ballistic pods → +5 Ballistic Damage, which feeds all six pods and a Vulcan main gun.
  • Three Ballistic + three Energy → +2 and +2, and each stat feeds only half of your pods.

A pure build has a higher ceiling. A mixed build is still a fine choice: Energy pods cover things Ballistic pods do not. Ion Pulse erases bullets, Plasma Arc chains between targets and Laser Lance pierces. You just need to invest a bit differently.

How to make a mixed loadout work

  1. Pick a main class that matches your main gun. On a Vulcan ship, let Ballistic be your core and spend your class-stat upgrades there. Energy pods are there for their utility.

  2. Buy stats that help everything. Damage %, Attack Speed, Crit Chance and Projectiles boost every pod and the main gun, so they never go to waste in a hybrid build.

  3. Use dual-class pods as bridges. Railgun (Ballistic + Precision), Plasma Arc (Energy + Precision) and Shield Orb (Drone + Energy) each fill two sets with one slot.

  4. Use crystals to match your gun to your build. Crystal pickups cycle through red V → blue L → purple P about every 1.5 seconds. Grab one in the colour you want:

    • Same colour as your gun: +1 main gun level for this wave.
    • Different colour: your main gun switches to that type until the wave ends.

So an Energy-heavy THUNDERBOLT can catch a blue crystal and fire a Laser that actually uses its Energy Damage. Next wave the ship returns to its hangar gun. (The yellow P box is a different pickup: +1 main gun level for the wave.)

  5. Or fly a ship built for it. FALCON (Laser) and PHANTOM (Plasma) start on Energy main guns, so Energy Damage helps their main gun all run long.

Quick answers

  • Do Ballistic and Energy pods block each other? No. All six slots fire independently.
  • Can the main gun be Ballistic and Energy at once? No. It is one type at a time, chosen by your ship and changed for one wave by crystals.
  • Is a mixed build bad? No, but your class stats feed fewer guns. Lean on Damage %, Attack Speed, Crit and Projectiles.
