Shmup Rogue weapons guide: 12 pods, 5 classes and set bonuses
How weapon pods, tiers, combining and class set bonuses work in Shmup Rogue, with build ideas for every ship.
Your main gun (Vulcan, Laser or Plasma) is only half of your firepower in Shmup Rogue. The other half is up to six weapon pods that fire automatically. Choosing pods that work together is the heart of this shmup roguelike.
The five classes
Every pod belongs to one or two classes. Equipping two or more pods of the same class activates a set bonus that grows with each extra pod (2 to 6):
| Class | Set bonus |
|---|---|
| Ballistic | +1 to +5 Ballistic Damage |
| Energy | +1 to +5 Energy Damage |
| Explosive | +5% to +25% Area |
| Drone | +2 to +6 Engineering |
| Precision | +3% to +15% Crit Chance |
Pods with two classes, like the Railgun (Ballistic + Precision), Plasma Arc (Energy + Precision) and Shield Orb (Drone + Energy), count towards both sets.
All 12 weapon pods
Ballistic
- Vulcan Pod — fires a spread of tracer rounds.
- Gatling — rotary cannon with a very high fire rate.
- Flak Cannon — short-range shotgun burst.
- Railgun — hypersonic slug that pierces everything in a line (Ballistic + Precision).
Energy
- Laser Lance — piercing laser bolts; pierce grows with tier.
- Plasma Arc — lightning that locks onto the nearest foe and chains (Energy + Precision).
- Ion Pulse — an expanding ring that passes through enemies and erases bullets.
Explosive
- Homing Missiles — seeker missiles with a small blast.
- Nuclear Missile — slow, straight, with a huge blast radius.
- Cluster Bomb — bursts into a ring of bomblets.
Drone
- Option Drone — an orbiting option that auto-targets enemies and scales with Engineering.
- Shield Orb — orbiting orbs that block bullets and burn on contact (Drone + Energy).
Tiers and combining
Pods come in four tiers, I to IV. Two identical pods of the same tier combine into one pod of the next tier, with more damage and a faster fire rate. If all six slots are full, buying a matching pod combines it automatically — so a full loadout can still grow stronger. Higher-tier offers become more likely as the waves go on and as your Luck rises.
Build ideas
- Ballistic wall (THUNDERBOLT Mk-II, BULWARK): Vulcan Pods, Gatlings and Flak Cannons stack Ballistic Damage, which also strengthens the red Vulcan main gun.
- Energy lance (FALCON): Laser Lances and Ion Pulses stack Energy Damage for the blue Laser main gun; the Ion Pulse also erases bullets for a fragile ship.
- Precision assassin (PHANTOM): Railguns and Plasma Arcs fill both the Precision and Energy/Ballistic sets, on top of PHANTOM's +15% Crit.
- Drone swarm (WASP): Option Drones and Shield Orbs scale with Engineering, and WASP gets 50% more Engineering from every upgrade.
- Explosive economy (MIDAS): Homing Missiles and Cluster Bombs clear crowds while MIDAS's Luck and Harvesting bring in more scrap for rerolls.
Quick tips
- Commit to one or two classes instead of collecting one of everything.
- Mixing Ballistic and Energy pods is fine: they all fire together. See mixing weapon classes for how your main gun scales.
- Lock good pods in the shop when you cannot afford them yet.
- Do not forget your main gun: crystals and P power-ups from item carriers keep it relevant all run.
