Raiden III vs Shmup Rogue: Arcade vs Roguelike

Raiden III (MOSS, 2005) vs Shmup Rogue, a free browser shmup roguelike. Weapons, crystals, bombs, scoring and structure compared side by side.

Raiden III and Shmup Rogue are both vertical shooters, and both hand you a main gun that switches when you grab a colour-cycling power-up. If you have played one, the other will feel familiar for about thirty seconds. Then they go in very different directions. Raiden III is a fixed seven-stage arcade game built around routes and score. Shmup Rogue is a free browser shmup game where you rebuild your ship between timed waves, like a roguelike. This article compares the two side by side: what Raiden III is, what each game does with weapons, bombs and scoring, and which one suits what you want from a shmup.

What is Raiden III?

Raiden III is a vertically scrolling shooter that came out in Japanese arcades in March 2005. It was the first Raiden game made by MOSS, a studio of former Seibu Kaihatsu staff who took over the series, and it ran on Taito Type X hardware, which gave the series full 3D graphics for the first time. The story picks up the series' old plot: the alien Crystals invade Earth again, and you fly the ME-02 "Fighting Thunder" to stop them.

It was ported to the PlayStation 2 (Japan 2005, North America 2007), to Windows (Japan 2006, worldwide on Steam in 2014) and, in 2023, to Switch, PlayStation 4/5 and Xbox as Raiden III x MIKADO MANIAX. That last release is the easiest way to play it today.

What defines how Raiden III plays:

  • Three main weapons by colour. Power-up items cycle between red, blue and green. Red is the Vulcan, a spread that grows from 3 to 7 directions. Blue is the straight Laser. Green is the Proton Laser, new in Raiden III, a beam you sweep from side to side by moving the stick. Picking up more items of one colour powers that weapon up.
  • Three missile sub-weapons. M nuclear missiles start slow and hit hard, H homing missiles chase enemies for low damage, and the new R radar missiles lock onto enemies ahead of you.
  • Instant, full-screen bombs. Earlier Raiden bombs took a moment to go off and covered part of the screen. In Raiden III a bomb fires at once and clears the whole screen.
  • A smaller hitbox than earlier Raiden ships.
  • Flash Shot scoring. The faster you kill an enemy after it appears, the more it is worth, up to 2×. Medals add points and a stage-clear bonus, and a hidden fairy is worth 10,000 points.
  • Seven stages, three on Earth and four in space. The game ends after stage 7 instead of looping, and a clear takes about half an hour.
  • Double Play: one player can fly both ships with one controller.

What Shmup Rogue keeps from Raiden III

The flying will feel right to a Raiden player. You still fly over oceans, coastlines and cities, then out into space. You still shoot down helicopters, bombers, tanks and turrets, and the ground targets leave wrecks. Item carriers still drop power-ups and bombs, and the colour crystals still cycle through red, blue and a third colour, so you time your grab to pick the gun you want. The red Vulcan and blue Laser work the way you expect. Our third gun is closer to the bending plasma of Raiden II than to Raiden III's Proton Laser: purple lightning that locks onto targets by itself. You still save the bomb for when a boss changes phase.

What Shmup Rogue changes

The difference is everything between the shooting:

  1. Timed waves instead of stages. You survive a clock rather than reach the end of a map. The first wave lasts 35 seconds, waves grow to a minute by wave 10, and the final wave lasts 90 seconds.
  2. Scrap instead of score medals. Every enemy drops scrap. It fills your XP bar during the wave and becomes money when you land.
  3. A hangar shop between waves. You buy weapon pods that fire alongside your main gun (up to six), items with trade-offs and stat upgrades. You can lock an offer you can't afford yet and reroll the rest. Two identical pods merge into a stronger tier.
  4. Builds instead of one loadout. Raiden III gives you one main gun and one missile type. In Shmup Rogue, weapon classes (Ballistic, Energy, Explosive, Drone, Precision) add set bonuses, so a run can turn into a drone swarm, a railgun sniper or a missile carpet.
  5. No route to memorise. Shop offers and level-up choices are random, so you can't learn one perfect run the way Raiden III players learn each stage.

Which one should you play?

Play Raiden III if you want a classic arcade shooter: learn the stages, refine your route, push your Flash Shot score and one-credit clear. It is one of the cleanest modern entries in the series and the 2023 MIKADO MANIAX release is easy to get.

Play Shmup Rogue if you like Raiden's feel but want every run to be different, with planning between waves. It also suits a short break: it is free, runs in a browser tab and needs no install.

They don't compete for the same evening. Plenty of players will enjoy both.

Where to play Raiden III officially

Buy Raiden III x MIKADO MANIAX on Switch, PlayStation or Xbox, or the Windows version on Steam. Websites that offer "Raiden III online" are usually unlicensed copies.
